Stimulus equivalence: A critical
evaluation Judging from the sheer number of publications, the field known as stimulus equivalence seems to be one of the most productive domains of behavior analysis. Yet closer examination reveals a persistent lack of clarity in defining even the most basic concepts of stimulus equivalence research. In this presentation I try to clarify what the notions of equivalence are (there are at least three of them), why some of these notions matter, and why some others don't. I also suggest a reorientation of the field that is free of the limitations of traditional equivalence research. This reorientation involves a shift from stimulus equivalence to functional equivalence, and from the matching-to-sample procedure to response-independent correlations among stimuli.
