The mental schema of a a piece
of music in children from 10 to 12 years of age: Segmentation of the musical discourse and his reconstruction Irène Deliège, Dimitra Koniari et Marc Mélen Université de Liège et Université d'Aristotle de Thessaloniki, Belgium and Greece The role of cues abstraction in the segmentation process of a piece of music and the memory of its structures has been studied in the URPM projects since the end of the eighties with adult subjects. But the study of the development of such skills has not been undertaken until now. The present study is interested in both processes in children from 10 to 12 years of age and shall compare performances of non-musician and musician children. Two experiments were performed using short pieces of the classic repertoire (Diabelli et Schubert). The first is studying the processes of segmentation. The second concerns the role of abstracted cues in the reconstruction task of the pieces. Results were rather positive for the segmentation task. The reconstruction task was less easy. From a general point of view, children performances show a same trend as those of adults : (i) musical tuition does not really influence the segmentation task ; (ii) music tuition has a more clear influence in memory performances. A primacy and a recency effect in memory for musical structures was observed : this remark corroborates results of previous studies concerning memory in general. Keywords: segmentation, memory, cues abstraction, recency, primacy |
